The first Paws for Humanity Build the Barn fund-raising concert is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at 14671 Three Oaks Road, Three Oaks, with Mike “Blue Eyes” Felten performing.

Tickets, available at the door; are a suggested donation of $20. Concert-goers should bring their own chairs, blankets, picnic baskets and snacks, and plan to settle in and enjoy the music with sanctuary animals looking on.

Upcoming concerts are scheduled for Aug. 7, Aug. 21, Sept. 4 and Sept. 18. Artists include Patti Shaffner, and Chicken Dolphin Band.

Build the Barn is a fundraising project to assist Paws for Humanity in building a facility including an indoor riding arena, conference room, small offices, and animal housing for educational and therapeutic support services. For more, go to pawsforhumanity.org.

The School of American Music (SAM) will present the third annual American Music Festival from noon to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23. The free outdoor concert will be held on SAM’s Spring Creek stage, 14 Maple St., Three Oaks, Mich., behind the Arts & Education Center in Dewey Cannon Park. Shade is provided; personal lawn chairs are recommended.

The festival explores the roots of American music through tunes spanning blues, bluegrass, jazz and big band. Set to perform are: Noon – The Guitar Blues Project; 1 pm – The Martha Cares Trio with special guest Matthew Daniel; 2 pm – The Ben Benedict Bluegrass Quartet; 3:10 pm – Ole Harv & the Blues Katz; 4:30 pm – The Lake Effect Big Band.

The Spring Creek Horses Help Foundation will hold a “Down on the Farm Hoedown” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Saturday, August 6.

There will be a mock horse show class and trail rides (weather permitting), games, face painting, line dancing, concessions, bake sale, apparel and craft sales, and Hot Rod Snow Cones. In addition, children can have their photos taken with S’More, the pony, and there will be horses for kids to pet.

The event will be held at Spring Creek Equestrian Center, located at 16771 Pardee Road in Three Oaks. Bring the family, everyone is welcome.

All proceeds will benefit the Spring Creek Horses Help Foundation, a nonprofit which provides an equine-based educational program on horse behavior, barn and horse care, and horsemanship for local, under-resourced children and adults.

The Harbor Country Hikers will walk the trails of Chikaming Open Lands’ (COL) Burns Prairie Preserve near Galien at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 30. The 1.5-mile hike will be led by Ryan Postema, COL’s executive director.

Burns Prairie is a restored mesic, or moist, prairie seeded with native grasses and wildflowers. Unrestored mesic prairies, once home to bison, are now rare in Michigan. Burns Prairie is especially notable for its display of wildflowers, including black-eyed Susans, butterfly bush, cone flowers, Queen Anne’s lace, and many more.

Wednesday Night Music in the Park takes place weekly from 7 to 9 p.m. during the summer in New Buffalo Township’s Memorial Park. For more, go to newbuffalo township,org.

The #10Trail Challenge is underway. In July Chikaming Open Lands is partnering with The Rotary Club of St. Joseph-Benton and Harbor Country, non-profit nature centers, township parks, county parks, the DNR, local colleges and businesses to bring you 15 nature preserves.

The trails are located at: Red Mill County Park; Lydick Bog; Burns Prairie Preserve; Kesling Nature Preserve; Merritt and Younger Family Preserves; Edward & Elizabeth Leonard Wildlife Preserve; Sugarwood Forest Preserve; McCoy’s Creek Trail; Tower Hill Camp; Mt. Tabor Trails; Warren Dunes State Park (parking at Floral Lane entrance); Love Creek County Park; Riverview Park; Sarett Nature Center; and Ross Coastal Plain Marsh.

Those taking the challenge have the option to hike any 10 out of the 15 trails or go for “the #Extreme15.” #10Trail Challenge picture frame selfie stations will be located along trails.
